So how many of you can’t decide what is better for you or your business, a website or a blog? Well I did a bit of research and based on google trends, you maybe surprised. Based on results from 2004 until now the importance of blogs have severely overtaken standard websites. Blogs are simply taking over. Look at this image below that I copied from Google Trends. Its pretty self evident.

Website vs. Blog

The blue line represents the search volume for blogs and the red line represents the search volume for websites. So you tell me, which one would you and/or your business benefit more from?

The thing about blogs and websites is that, fundamentally, they are different. Traditional websites are static, or at least more so than blogs. They list products, information, maybe the occasional article. Blogs are continually changing, and therefore have more opportunity to cover a wide variety of topics and up-to-date info.

That’s the way I tend to think of them anyway. The lines are blurring a lot these days, with many blogs forsaking traditional date-based navigation (I tried to navigate back through one category on Freelance Switch the other day, it was a bitch!).

So basically I think if you want to get more and repeat visitors, blogs are the way of the future because people don’t keep coming back to a site that doesn’t change.
There’s still a place for static sites, but there’s definitely no harm in accompanying that site with a blog.

That said, one of the things I like about blogs is that they’re real people giving real opinions and information. I hope there’s not too many “corporate” blogs emerging that defy this reliable trend.

Woah, that was almost a whole other blog post right there. :S

Kristarella - I believe certain companies could really benefit by blogging. For instance, retail companies can maintain fresh content by providing sales info on a day to day basis. For example, WalMart has their own blog now. http://checkoutblog.com/
They are using their blog to provide information on whats to change in their stores as well as what new items they are promoting and so forth. If done correctly, blogging can prove to be very helpful in the business world.
