It can be a little tough to maintain, but I currently run 5 and its not really that bad. I would think that the opportunity for SEO would be better if you did that as well as profit. I have never been a niche blogger and I don't think I will be. Unless design/photography/blogging geeks with a touch of life becomes a niche — those are actually my favourite blogs.
