Wordpress 2.6 Update

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I can’t stand it anymore! Every time I log into Wordpress I am reminded once again that I need to update to Wordpress 2.6! Ok, so not a bad thing. Its actually good that they provide that info, because I would probably be to lazy to go out and find it myself.

So whats 2.6 contain? What is different from 2.5, which was a complete overhauling. Well, There is a video available that explains it all. Check it out.

This actually ties directly into another topic I wanted to cover. Backing up your blog. One good plugin that I have found that provides a direct connection to your database from the WP-Admin Panel, is WP-phpMyAdmin. It is extremely important to backup your blog often. If you have never had a site crash on you before, believe me when I say its the worst feeling ever. Especially one that is a few years old. BACK UP YOUR BLOGS TODAY!!!

Creating A Blog

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Everyone has their own reasons to create a blog so I won’t talk about the topics or any of that crap here. Well I will say one thing. If you plan to make money with your blog, try to make the topic of conversation around one niche. I think there are a lot of people out there that are missing out on the opportunities that true blogging, not the myspace and facebook blogging, can provide you. So how do you do it?

Well the first thing is to have your own hosting account somewhere. Some examples are GoDaddy.com, Dreamhost.com, Bravenet.com etc… There are a lot of different companies around that will provide good deals on hosting and registering, but you need to find what best works for you. I would make sure your hosting company has built in FTP program so you don’t have to buy an FTP Client. However an FTP Client is much better and sometimes easier to use. If you have any questions about anything in this post, leave us a comment.

The second part would be to register a site name (example.com). Most hosting companies have this feature on their site, but you can also use Register.com. Then after your hosting account is setup and you have the FTP all ready to go you need to install Wordpress (or which ever data management system you prefer) by going to Wordpress.org/download. Simply follow their simple install guide and you will be all setup and ready to go.

Not happy with the default WP theme? You can go to a number of sites to find WP themes, however I have a few that I use myself. BlogohBlog.com and Themes.Wordpress.net. If you still can’t find something you like and want to create your own theme, you can try this theme generator site. After finding the theme you like, download it and upload it to your wp-content/themes/ folder with the ftp client you chose. Then login to your wordpress account and go to Design and choose that theme. Its that simple. Basic setup is complete.

In the next post in this series we will cover the things you can do to monetize your site and how you to setup your very own RSS Feed. Other topics we will cover is setting up your WP plugins, Twitter, posting and more.
